After asking 100 people, it’s unanimous that this is the place where China’s plumpest reside!

After visiting numerous times, I’ve discovered that “delicious” is just its most well-known aspect.
Ubiquitous Lingnan culture, traditional markets and stylish boutiques side by side, the wellness philosophy of soaking even in the summer… I came determined to eat my heart out, but ended up being utterly charmed by Guangdong’s other merits.
Last week, we reviewed the Zhejiang travel guides we’ve written over the past three years, and the top comment demanded a comprehensive guide to the Pearl River Delta.

image1.jpeg

Looking back, it’s indeed been way too long since we’ve updated it.
So here it is, the promised extensive guide to Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau.

After traveling deeply within the country for three years, I casually counted and found out I’ve already produced 82 pure guides, half of which are new content. So remember to bookmark, share, and give it a triple thumbs-up!
Guangzhou

image2.png

Old Guangzhou doesn’t need Michelin stars, nor does it believe in trendy hotspots.

We’ve written several food guides for Guangzhou, from Black Pearl-rated restaurants to street-side eateries. Regardless of cost, the recommendation standard is always that they are “universally praised by local neighbors.” Feel free to enjoy the following Guangzhou restaurants!
👉 Guangzhou Food Map: Don’t waste a single inch of your stomach; we’ve planned your three meals a day in Guangzhou!
👉 Guangzhou Neighborhood Eateries: What hidden gems are in the bookmarks of old Guangzhou locals?
👉 Guangzhou Dive Bars: Experience the authentic old Guangzhou flavors at dive bars
There aren’t many well-known attractions in Guangzhou, but if you ask me about restaurants I want to try, the list would be longer than the Canton Tower.

image3.jpeg

If I were to further categorize these eateries, I would definitely reserve some stomach space for the two representatives of Cantonese cuisine: morning tea and dessert soup.
👉 Guangzhou Morning Tea: This city will make everyone in the country drool over breakfast and visiting 10,000 times wouldn’t be enough!
### Translations
👉 Guangzhou Sweet Soup ①: Guangzhou is truly a paradise for sweet soup shops.
👉 Guangzhou Sweet Soup ②: Coming to this city, you will find plenty of sweetness.

image4.jpeg

No matter how many times we visit Guangzhou, our goal of exploring food is no longer limited to local cuisine.
The “Guangzhou Office” that gathers flavors from all over the country has also become a part of the “Guangzhou taste.”
👉 Guangzhou Office: Damn, these divine restaurants have amazed me again!

image5.jpeg

Both eating and drinking need to be taken care of.
We have written coffee maps for several cities, and Guangzhou is considered a “late bloomer.”
A few years ago, chain coffee shops were still mainstream, but in recent years, independent coffee shops have sprung up like mushrooms after the rain.
We, who enjoy a bit of everything, have written about both Guangzhou’s specialty coffee shops and chain coffee (Starbucks).
👉 Guangzhou Coffee: I want to be a coffee connoisseur in Guangzhou.
👉 Guangzhou Starbucks: Don’t forget them while strolling in Guangzhou!

image6.png

Faster than flying there is my speed of online shopping for Guangzhou products, allowing me to easily achieve “one cup, two pieces” freedom at home!
👉 Online Shopping Guangzhou: After eating these, I really want to be reborn as a native Cantonese in my next life!

image7.jpeg

I find it really hard to write a pure Guangzhou walking guide because halfway through the walk, it always “deviates” to eating and drinking.
No way, this is Guangzhou! Strolling is more like a post-meal exercise than sightseeing.
👉 Guangzhou Strolling and Eating Guide ①: Three-day walking map of old Guangzhou, a classic guide worth keeping!
👉 Guangzhou Strolling and Eating Guide ②: How to explore Guangzhou on a second visit? Walk these four streets.

image8.jpeg

Shangxiajiu and Enning Road are the first stops for many people visiting Guangzhou, but our way of exploring Guangzhou is a bit unconventional.
We went to Dongshankou, where tradition and fashion are seamlessly mixed, to Huangpu District, which even locals might not be very familiar with, and to Baohan Straight Street, the “exotic” place in Guangzhou city… These are just a few of the many faces of Guangzhou, all equally charming.
👉 Dongshankou: This divine street in China is said to give people a fear of trendy people.
👉Huangpu District: Spend 2 yuan and take a ferry to discover the hidden corners of Guangzhou.
👉Baohan Direct Street: This street saved me thousands in airfare!

image9.jpeg

If the markets in Yunnan open up a new world with their exotic products, then strolling through the markets in Guangzhou will leave you in awe of their highly specialized categorization.
Clothing accessories, fruits and vegetables, flowers and birds, insects and fishes—virtually every category of daily life can find a large wholesale market in Guangzhou.
👉Guangzhou Markets①: After visiting here, I realized you can’t imagine the joy of Guangzhou’s residents!
👉Guangzhou Markets②: Trust me, if you’re going to Guangzhou, this is the place to be!

image10.jpeg

If you feel the New Year’s atmosphere is dull in your city, I highly recommend spending the New Year in Guangzhou!
Buy Spring Festival couplets and red envelopes on Yide Road, grab some dried fruits and seafood, buy New Year flowers at the Lingnan Flower Market, and get new clothes at the Thirteenth Block Wholesale Market. The entire city is immersed in a festive and joyful atmosphere.
👉Spending New Year in Guangzhou: Wow, how can a city be so good at eating, playing, and celebrating?

image11.jpeg

Guangzhou may not have standout tourist landmarks, but it does have Chimelong. Should you choose Guangzhou or Zhuhai Chimelong? Adults should definitely go to both!

image12.jpeg

Shenzhen

Shenzhen is known as the “city of youth and ambition,” but we have found some reasons for it to be a “vacation” destination as well.
For instance, new and trendy brands often use Shenzhen as a testing ground. The streets and shops in Shenzhen are always pleasing to the eye and emptying your wallet.
👉Shenzhen Eating and Shopping Guide①: Everyone says this tier-one city is dull, but I’ve fallen madly in love with it!
👉Shenzhen Eating and Shopping Guide②: Why does this youngster of a city know so well how to win over young people?
👉Shenzhen Eating and Shopping Guide③: How to explore and enjoy this least noticeable tier-one city.

image13.jpeg

Additionally, Shenzhen is definitely a place worth a dedicated food tour.
Throughout last year, our editorial team took a stand against those who call Shenzhen a “culinary desert.”
While it may not have its own distinct culinary culture, it boasts the most inclusive attitude, ensuring that every taste can find a place in Shenzhen’s food scene.
Sure, here is the translation of the provided Chinese text into English, maintaining the original meaning and tone, and ensuring good readability. Each paragraph is separated by two line breaks.

👉Shenzhen Food Map: 48 Hours in Shenzhen: Hmph, this place is definitely not a food desert!

image14.jpeg

👉Shenzhen Office: Calling it a “food desert”? I really don’t agree!
👉Shenzhen Urban Villages: With an average spend of 50+, I ate so much in this “food desert” that I could barely walk!

image15.jpeg

By the way, in Huaqiangbei, where everything can be sold, we didn’t get scammed. Instead, we unexpectedly had a super luxurious global snack shopping experience.
👉Huaqiangbei: Huaqiangbei Detour Experience: Here, I can buy snacks with flavors from all over the world!
In a city with many workers, the coffee atmosphere is usually not thin.
Although the young people here are competitive, the coffee atmosphere in Shenzhen is surprisingly simple and pleasant.
Coupled with imaginative coffee specialties, it will be another reason for you to fall in love with this city.

image16.jpeg

👉Shenzhen Coffee①: Shenzhen may seem boring, but it hides the most interesting coffee shops in the country.
👉Shenzhen Coffee②: If you really love coffee, then come to this city!
Maybe no one would come to Shenzhen specifically to see the sea, but the sea in Shenzhen has become another reason to love her.
You can see the sea within the city, especially beautiful at sunset.
Starting from the Dameisha and Xiaomeisha scenic areas, and heading towards the Dapeng Peninsula, the bluer the sea, the more open your mind becomes.

image17.jpeg

👉Shenzhen Sea Viewing Guide: Let the warm Shenzhen help you fulfill your obsession with seeing the sea in winter!

👉Shenzhen Metro Line 8: Do you want to take this sea-viewing and food-hunting special metro line?
Zhuhai
Seeing the sea is also a “specialty” of neighboring Zhuhai.
This city, embraced by the sea and known as the city of a hundred islands, is naturally adept at creating a romantic atmosphere.
Although if you ask Zhuhai people what to do, most will reply “go to Macau across the way,” this relaxed coastal city is still worth your infatuation.

image18.jpeg

👉Zhuhai Eating and Touring Guide①: The place that tastes most like Hong Kong, don’t just treat it as a transit stop.
👉 Zhuhai Travel and Food Guide ②: You’ve Misunderstood Zhuhai; This is Its True Face
Basically, when it comes to food, cities in the Lingnan region never disappoint, and Zhuhai is a multifaceted gourmet haven.

image19.jpeg

The culinary genes of Zhuhai feature Guangdong heritage and also blend in Hong Kong and Macau flavors. Being a coastal city, seafood is a must, setting a high bar for dining standards.

👉 Zhuhai Food Map: From Cha Chaan Teng to Cafés, Coming to Zhuhai Just for the Food is Totally Worth It!
Shantou
Guangdong has so many places worthy of a visit just for the food, and the Chaoshan area is a recognized pilgrimage site for foodies. Don’t come unless you’re prepared to gain 5 pounds.
While the walking tour guide is still blank, we’ve got two comprehensive Shantou food maps ready for you.

image20.jpeg

👉 Shantou Food Map ①: A Must-Visit City for Foodies, It Deserves a Top Spot!
👉 Shantou Food Map ②: Just How Delicious is Shantou? Read This to Find Out!
I’ve been to Shantou twice, and my itinerary was quite similar both times: savoring food on land and island-hopping to admire the sea.

image21.jpeg

Ever since the Nan’ao Bridge opened, driving to Nan’ao Island to enjoy island freedom has become easy, making three-day-two-night or two-day-one-night trips ideal.

👉 Nan’ao Island: The Hottest Island of the Year, and the Best Food Isn’t Even Seafood?!
Chaozhou
Each Chaozhou food guide should have a subtitle “A Chronicle of Yet Another Failed Diet.”
Capable of balancing northern and southern flavors and easing the sweet-salty divide, Chaozhou really leaves no room for bad food.

image22.png

👉 Chaozhou Food Map ①: Oh My, Chaozhou is Outrageously Delicious!
👉 Chaozhou Food Map ②: If You Only Plan on Eating 5 Meals a Day in Chaozhou, You’re Missing Out!
In the Chaoshan region, I’ve visited Chaozhou the most.
Apart from the shared understanding of its delicious food, Chaozhou’s deeply rooted clan customs and exquisite traditional crafts are sights you won’t see in other tourist cities.

image23.jpeg

You’ve read many Chaozhou food guides, but this travel and New Year guide to Chaozhou will surely offer you a fresh perspective.

👉Chaozhou Travel and Food Guide: Airfare from 200+, Food Frenzy, Explosive Festive Atmosphere! This is the must-visit destination for this year’s Spring Festival~
Jieyang
Among the three cities in Chaoshan, Jieyang is the most low-key.
Despite being the largest in area, despite the airport being located here, and despite having one of the oldest counties in Guangdong, people often overlook it due to its low profile. But underestimate it at your own peril—this Jieyang travel and food guide will prove you wrong.

image24.jpeg

👉Jieyang Travel and Food Guide: Just a Transfer Station? That would be a serious injustice to this ancient Chaoshan city.
For those in the know, it’s no secret that Chaoshan’s deliciousness can also be brought closer via shopping apps. Writing about online shopping in Chaoshan is truly a sweet burden~

image25.jpeg

👉Online Shopping Chaoshan: The ultimate shopping list for this gourmet paradise. Even after 999 repeat purchases, it’s never enough!

Shanwei
Although the concept of the “Chaoshan region” often includes Shanwei, those who have been there know that Shanwei is quite different. Forcing it into the category feels a bit out of place.
Shanwei is like a song by the band Wutiaoren, with a distinct grassroots vibe and a carefree attitude.
It may not be a tourist city, but it has a calming effect on the heart similar to a vacation.

image26.jpeg

👉Shanwei Travel and Food Guide: Listen to Wutiaoren’s music, enjoy the sea breeze, and feast on seafood in Shanwei!
What does Shanwei have? Unexpected seascapes and delightful cuisine.
It’s somewhat like a tourist-free version of Chaozhou, which I think holds a fatal attraction for those who enjoy niche travel destinations.

image27.jpeg

👉Shanwei Food Map: A personal trip to see the sea in Shanwei. I fell in love at first sight.

Foshan
The Guangfo metro line has brought the two cities closer together, but Foshan itself is unwilling to acknowledge the title of “Guangzhou’s Backyard.”
Compared to other Lingnan cities, Foshan’s respect for tradition is what attracts me most.
Vibrant and inclusive, this place is full of complex and fascinating tension. The Foshan travel and food guide will give you a deeper understanding of her.

image28.jpeg

👉 Foshan Travel & Food Guide: The City I Want to Visit Most Post-Pandemic, My Top Choice!
People often say that the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region is incredibly fragmented, and among these, Foshan in the Chicken Leg Province is perhaps the most scattered.
In the past, Foshan was no larger than today’s Zumiao Street in Chancheng District. The old town is brimming with various delicacies, and even with Shunde nearby, Chancheng’s culinary delights can still make many salivate.

image29.jpeg

👉 Chancheng + Nanhai Food Map: You Can Eat Non-stop from Early Morning to 1 AM in the City of Hidden Tycoons
There’s no need to elaborate further. Shunde cuisine is arguably the least “useless” guide I’ve ever written, as it’s genuinely challenging to find a bad restaurant there.
With my stomach’s capacity, I assure you the places I mention here are all exceptionally good!

image30.jpeg

👉 Shunde Food Map: No One Can Leave Shunde Without Gaining Weight

Shaoguan
In my impression, the typical image of Guangdong people is wearing T-shirts and flip-flops, with what seems like summer all year round.
This stereotype was completely shattered after visiting Shaoguan, the northern gateway of Guangdong.

image31.jpeg

Its autumn offers beautiful views and ginkgo appreciation and is the only city in Guangdong where you can see snow. The seasons couldn’t be more distinct.
Moreover, Shaoguan’s cuisine is a battlefield of fierce culinary collisions, featuring authentic Hunan and Jiangxi dishes while retaining Cantonese habits, and includes genuine Hakka cuisine.
A reasonable plan would be to spend half a day exploring the food in Shaoguan city and then arrange a 1-2 day road trip.

Zhanjiang
The quality of Zhanjiang seafood is known by every Guangdong resident.
In recent years, it gained even more prominence thanks to shows like “The Story of the String,” “The Bad Kids,” and Pineapple Sea.

image33.jpeg

👉 Zhanjiang Travel & Food Guide: Gain Three Pounds in Two Days! I Advise You Not to Come to This Small City!
As a Zhejiang resident who loves seafood, I truly adore Zhanjiang!
Put it this way, once the fishing season in Zhanjiang starts, even if compared to top-tier foodie circles like Shunde and Chaozhou-Shantou, it won’t lose.

Zhaoqing
Last year, we filled a significant gap in our Greater Bay Area travel guides, with Zhaoqing being one of the highlights.
This usually low-profile charming city gave us many surprises, especially its well-preserved ancient architecture, which is as precious and beautiful as a pearl in the ocean, endowing the city with a noble sense of timelessness.

Jiangmen
The first hit drama of the year, “The Knockout,” left me craving for more, and the filming location, Jiangmen, gained some fame along with the show.
Jiangmen has always been a small city with a strong local flavor, filled with various arcades built by returned overseas Chinese, old-time stores, and street stalls scattered everywhere, naturally creating a nostalgic feel without any deliberate construction.
How to explore and eat in Jiangmen? One guide is enough.

image36.jpeg

👉 Jiangmen Travel and Food Guide: As I Chased the First Hit Drama of the Year, the Filming Locations Left Me Craving!
Jiangmen boasts mountains, rivers, hot springs, and a particularly long coastline.
Besides being suitable for vacations, in the eyes of food lovers, only the words “abundant resources” come to mind.
Just like its city’s character, it doesn’t fuss over the environment or grandeur. Grounded and flavorful local food is the soul of Jiangmen’s cuisine.

Maoming
Western Guangdong is a travel blind spot for many, but Maoming in this region has quite a few attractions.

image38.jpeg

With the sea, hot springs, and old streets, you can freely combine countless travel plans for Maoming. Especially when Huizhou and Shantou are crowded with people, Maoming’s advantages become even more apparent.
Maoming’s travel season is actually quite long.
In the summer, you can play in the sand and eat seafood by the sea, and in the winter, you can enjoy chicken dishes and soak in hot springs. For an out-of-province tourist like me, teaming up with Zhanjiang next door makes the trip even more perfect.
The last time I went to Maoming, it was specifically for the hot springs. I’ve already planned to go again when the lychees are in season.

image39.jpeg

👉 Maoming Travel and Food Guide: The City of Lychees in China, the Hidden Champion of Chicken Dishes in Guangdong, check it out!

Huizhou
Huizhou’s sea is beautiful; perhaps that’s the first impression many people have of her.

image40.jpeg

Even in Guangdong, which has the longest coastline in the country, Huizhou is still a top choice for sea viewing. During holidays, the roads leading to Double Moon Bay and Xunliao Bay are often jam-packed.
Lesser known is her identity as a “Hot Spring Tycoon.” The love Guangdong people have for hot springs is undeniable. The local hot springs are certified authentic, and I’ve seen prices range from 200 to 600 yuan.

image41.png

👉 Huizhou Travel and Food Guide: Everyone knows to buy a house here, but did you know the hot springs are so great and the seafood so delicious!
No travel guide to any city in Guangdong is complete without food.
Huizhou’s cuisine might not be very famous, but it’s certainly not its weak point. We’ve compiled a list of understated yet delicious old eateries for you to check out~

image42.jpeg

👉 Huizhou Food Map: Don’t want to wait in long lines in Shunde? Discover this humble yet delicious small city right next to Guangzhou.

Meizhou
Meizhou holds a very special place in Guangdong. I estimate it would take visiting the province seventeen or eighteen times to notice this small city.

image43.jpeg

Located at the junction of Guangdong, Fujian, and Jiangxi provinces, Meizhou is deeply influenced by Hakka culture, which affects its local customs, dialect, and culinary culture, distinctly setting it apart from the Cantonese and Chaoshan regions.
Nestled between Fujian and Chaoshan, Meizhou’s cuisine is a delightful mix.
Here, you can savor authentic Hakka dishes as well as the common porridge, noodles, and rice dishes found throughout Guangdong. You can also enjoy Fujian-style pastries and desserts, offering a culinary journey through time and space.

image44.jpeg

👉 Meizhou Food Map: At the border of Fujian and Guangdong lies a humble yet delicious small city waiting to be discovered.

Yangjiang
Guangdong’s long coastline provides a natural advantage for island vacations.
Apart from Nanao Island, we also specifically visited Hailing Island in Yangjiang last year.

image45.jpeg

The sea view is stunningly blue and beautiful, island transportation is convenient, and there’s a cultural touch. The Pearl River Delta vacation should definitely choose it!
It’s our consistent principle to speak both the good and the bad.
Hailing Island is worth visiting. You should read the Hailing Island pitfall guide in advance.
I’ve encountered all the pitfalls for you, so your travel experience on Hailing Island will be even better.

image46.jpeg

👉 Hailing Island Guide: How to fully enjoy this South Coast island that’s been popular for so many years?

Qingyuan
Although it’s been a long-time neighbor of Guangzhou, Qingyuan is very different from any other Guangdong city I’ve ever visited.
Next to a bunch of concrete and steel cities in the Pearl River Delta, Qingyuan’s lush green mountains and waters stand out incredibly. If you cover the map coordinates, you might mistakenly think it’s Guilin or Yangshuo!

image47.jpeg

👉 Qingyuan Travel and Food Guide: What a surprise! This city, recently booming due to camping, has overturned my perception of Guangdong.
More famous than Qingyuan itself is undoubtedly the Qingyuan chicken, a must on the dining tables of Guangdong people.
But after a trip there, I realized that Qingyuan’s food map extends far beyond just Qingyuan chicken.
Out-of-towners come here for the chicken, while people from Guangzhou head straight to the North River for the freshest river delicacies and various Cantonese snacks, yum!

image48.jpeg

👉 Qingyuan Food Map: After the Guangqing Intercity Railway opened, I quickly booked a trip to Qingyuan to savor some chicken!

Dongguan
I’ve been inspired by many places through food documentaries, and Dongguan lives up to the hype in every way.

image49.jpeg

Roast goose lai fun, Humen crab cakes, Dongguan sausages, and various fruits—2 days and 1 night are simply not enough to enjoy it all. After all, thanks to “Taste of Dongguan,” it feels like a vast grassland has been planted in my heart.
I feel Dongguan’s urban development is somewhat similar to Jiangmen, typifying “decentralization.” All 32 towns are great spots for food exploration.
I suggest focusing on Dongcheng, Nancheng, and Wanjiang districts for higher dining efficiency.
👉 Dongguan Food Map ①: Experience the joy of five meals a day while discovering the flavors of Dongguan.

image50.png

👉 Dongguan Food Map ②: Besides Zhanjiang and Shantou, Guangdong has another forgotten food city.

Zhongshan

image51.jpeg

Zhongshan has yet to gain much fame in the tourism scene, but as a lover of old towns and streets, I secretly hope it can progress a bit slower, so that the old shophouses and buildings can remain for a little longer.
Once again, we indulged ourselves in Zhongshan. As one of the birthplaces of Cantonese cuisine, Zhongshan’s food scenes are so rich that writing a food guide involves two full articles. Never underestimate how delicious it can be.
👉Zhongshan Food Map ①: A hidden gem town that even locals rave about, truly delicious to the point of making you scream!

image52.png

👉Zhongshan Food Map ②: A foodie’s happy hometown just 0.5h from Guangzhou, even with a full sprint, you’ll only scratch the surface!
With five or six meals a day sorted in every city, beyond food themes, there are two seasonal reasons to visit Guangdong.
In summer, come to Guangdong to see the sea.
Many cities within the province have beaches within their urban areas where you can gaze upon the sea. If the water isn’t blue enough for your liking, you can always take a boat to one of the islands. This “drumstick-like” province hides quite a few treasures.

image53.jpeg

👉Guangdong Sea Viewing Guide: Why not go seaside in Guangdong together? There’s always an island that can make you dream for a while
In winter, Guangdong is the place to go for hot springs.
The geothermal resources in Guangdong are so abundant that hot spring water flows naturally. Although I believe there’s room for improvement in Guangdong’s hot spring hotels, the sheer number of options and the low prices make the hot springs themselves worth it.

Hong Kong
After the restoration of Hong Kong travel permits, my social media is suddenly filled with updates from people locating themselves in Hong Kong.

Macau
In the past three years, I’ve visited Macau more times than I did in all the years before 2019 combined.
Though Macau is smaller than Pudong Airport, it certainly doesn’t equate to “boring.”
Here’s a guide for exploring and indulging in Macau, suitable for your first or even nth visit.

Macau’s cuisine is incredibly diverse and exciting. It’s not just about the eight great culinary traditions; you can find food from around the world that hits the spot exactly.

Of course, we’ve thoroughly explored them all.

The cost of living in Macau is quite high, so saving money wherever possible is essential. Besides taking advantage of all sorts of consumer coupons and hotel vouchers, many people throw away their boarding passes after leaving the airport, but that could actually save you a lot of money!
